I hit the superfecta last night at Hailey’s in Denton with a stellar lineup even though I showed up a hair too late and missed the opener, Peter Broderick. A few members of Sleep Whale (aka Mom) arrived when I did and were bummed to have missed Broderick’s classical acoustic folk as well. The Magic, from Ontario, took the stage next with an ‘80’s pop sound and a complimenting strong female voice for most of the songs. I am surprised The Magic are not signed with a label.
Human Highway started with a few ‘dreamy’ songs and ended with upbeat ‘60’s influenced tunes. Both Jim Guthrie and Nicholas Thorburn have mesmerizing voices that you might find familiar because they come from the band, Islands. Efterklang performed a powerful set with a mix of magical sounds mostly from the Parades album and some new material. The different elements of Efterklang blend perfectly to make a cohesive unit that can not be duplicated by other bands. The icing on the cake was the group bow at the end. It is only the second show where all members bow in unison, a thank you of sorts from the band to all the fans that support them.
