I walk into the Loft and Rob is leaning against a pillar in the middle of the room with a glass of Coke in one hand and what looked like a glass of bourbon in the other, a gigantic beard resting heavy on his chin. I introduce myself and we go to the green room to do our interview.
Not only is Rob Crow extremely nice he’s also funny. I ask him a few questions and at the end of the interview he makes mention that his entire house is a recording studio. He tells me that every room is set up in a fashion so that he can just hit a button and start recording whenever he gets an idea.
This revelation tickles me to no end and when I tell him that that is how I hoped his house would be he laughed. When we were done I told him I was stoked abut the gig and he said, “Well, we are gonna rock it for you and the other 2 people out there.”
I acknowledge the lack of people and he laughed again and said, “Hey that’s why they call it a guarantee.”
The line up tonight was supposed to be Warship, Blood Ov and Goblin Cock but Warship’s bus broke down and the line up came down to two bands.
Blood Ov opened up and this band is true dirge. I don’t know how else to describe it. Slow, dirty, heavy, brutal. A very slow, droning beat and shrieking vocals made this by far and away the most evil band I’ve seen in awhile. Think Bathory with a bit of Gall Hammer then throw in a bunch of Black Metal bands that I’m not nearly well versed enough on to mention. Its pure crusty, black, drone.
Don’t bring your girlfriend to see Blood Ov unless she wears a bullet belt is what I trying to say.
In between sets a bunch of what looked like DudeBros wearing ringer tee’s that said Goblin Cock Crew came out and set up equipment. A few minutes later the band pops out of no where in the now famous druid cloaks.
Basically, the band dresses up not only on stage but in preparation to go on stage. Greatness.
The set was a mix of tracks from the old album, Bagged and Boarded and songs from the new disc, Come with Me If You Want to Live. The only band members face that is visible is Rob’s, the rest of the band look like some kind of Anton Levay rejects that do nothing but throw devil horns.
The stage was intermittently lit up by strobe lights and was covered with skulls. The keyboard player actually had black pom-poms that he gave to some chick in the audience,
Did I mention how badass this show was???
Goblin Cock played for a little less than an hour and then came out for a two song encore. Overall I thought that the set list was good until they whipped out a cover of Tears for Fears’, Head Over Heels. I’ve seen a lot of bands play a lot of covers over the years and that was hilarious and pushed the set from good to great.
This was Goblin Cocks first outing to Dallas and hopefully will not be their last. Next time Rob is in town, no matter what band it is, show up.
You will not be disappointed.
